Differences Between Men And Women - 1338 Words

Over the course of history, men and women have be faced with a communication barrier. The differing communication skills between men and women present challenges that can lead to foreseeable problems in relationships. These problems arise out of differing purposes, styles, traits, and emotions that accompany communication between the two sexes. Unless an understanding is reached, these barriers may never be broken down. The structure of men and women’s brain differ, which is the underlying cause to the differing communication skills (â€Å"Men and Women†). A study was conducted to examine the structural differences of men and women’s brains and the results provided an explanation to why men and women behave differently (â€Å"Men and Women†).†¦show more content†¦in Morrison). This desire for intimacy induces women to discuss her problems with her partner. However, this conversation initiated by the women quickly takes a turn for the worse becaus e the man views this as a request for advice, but in reality, the woman wants to be comforted. This is where the potential relationship obstacle arises. Because the man misinterprets the request for comfort as a request for his proposal, â€Å"The women begins to feel that her man doesn’t care about her because he won’t talk to her in a way that feels intimate† (Morrison). When a woman feels as if she is not cared about, the decay of the relationship begins. John Gray, a marriage therapist, emphasizes the differences in the styles of communication of the two sexes (Stewart). The rate at which men and women talk varies greatly. Women tend to speak must faster than men, speaking at 250 words per minute, while men only speak at 125 words per minute (Goldsmith). According the author Gary Smalley, â€Å"†¦in the course of the day women speak 25,000 words compared to a man who only uses 12,000† (qtd. in Goldsmith). Men also tend to switch topic over the c ourse of a conversation more frequently than women do (Tannen). Women who tend to discuss one topic the entire course of a conversation, feel as if men are not listening to them when they begin to change the subject (Tannen).
